A PRACTICAL GUIDE
The Author’s Next Step Checklist
Use these questions to name your current stage. You do not need every answer today; the gaps will help you decide what kind of support to seek.
01 / THE MANUSCRIPT
Is the book taking shape?
- Can I describe who the book is for and what readers will gain?
- Does the structure take readers on a clear journey?
- Have I identified sections that feel thin, repetitive, or out of order?
- Do I know whether I need an editorial assessment, developmental editing, copy editing, or proofreading?
If these questions are hard to answer: begin with a Clarity Session or Editorial Roadmap.
02 / PUBLISHING
Am I ready for production?
- Is the manuscript revised and ready for design?
- Have I chosen print, ebook, or both, with a suitable format and trim size?
- Do I understand the ISBN, metadata, pricing, and distribution choices?
- Have I planned for cover, interior, proofs, and platform setup?
If decisions are still open: explore Publishing Preparation. If files and details are nearly ready, Self-Publishing Setup may fit.
03 / READERS
How will people discover the book?
- Can I explain the book’s promise in one or two sentences?
- Do I know where my intended readers already spend time?
- Are my book description, author presence, and purchase page ready?
- Do I have a manageable launch or relaunch plan?
If the book needs visibility: a Book Marketing & Author Platform Plan can focus your effort.
YOUR NEXT STEP
Choose the most pressing question.
You may be ready in one area and uncertain in another. That is normal. Start with the decision that affects everything after it, then ask for help with the parts that need professional judgment.
